The Brownstone Arch Pavilion took a big step forward Tuesday (Dec, 7) when construction began on the new building, located next to the police station. This project has been a long-gestating one and involves a piece of portland history. Quarry workers used to haul pieces of brownstone with this arch, which would be pulled by oxen. Such an arch which dates back to the 19th century is hard to come by. Many years ago, one of the quarry owners gave an arch to the town of Portland. It has bee treasured ever since. The arch had been displayed in front of the Brownstone Intermediate School, but it suffered over the years due to the elements. Post an Beam Homes, Inc has been contracted with constructing the pavillion to protect this important piece of Portland's history.
